The Bedford girls’ volleyball team has been doing a lot of sweeping lately, but Saturday’s plans might not include any brooms.
The Kicking Mules team was perfect in winning its own Feb. 8 tournament, then swept two Southeastern Conference opponents last Wednesday. The team won the Ladywood Tournament on Saturday.
This Saturday should present much more of a challenge as the team holds it third invitational of the season, welcoming such teams as Airport, Walled Lake Central, Marian, Hanover Horton and Fraser.
Fraser is the team that ended the Mules’ season in the state semifinals last season.
Also, Bedford will welcome back the team it defeated in the finals at Ladywood, which is Ladywood.
Bedford took the match 15-1, 15-5 after going 6-0 in pool play against Lakeland (15-3, 15-12), Walled Lake Central (15-7, 15-9) and Wyandotte Roosevelt (15-5, 15-6).
Bedford topped Kalamazoo Central in the quarterfinals, 15-1, 15-4, and then St. Mary Catholic Central, 15-6, 15-4, in the semifinal round before claiming the final match.
Coach Jodi Manore said every player got in for at least two matches and played well.
"We played really well today," she said. "It was a good day for us, coming off last weekend’s win, then winning two very easily midweek and a tournament today. … Things are looking good right now."
Erica Kaczorowski led with 34 kills on the day and also hit .477 while serving for 31 points and collecting 38 digs, which also led the team.
Setter Jenifer Sulewski recorded 118 assists. She also had 19 kills, while hitting .516 and compiling 30 digs and 18 blocks.
Abbie Riddle didn’t commit any errors on the day and hit .733 for 11 kills.
Chelsea Kitzmiller contributed with 27 points, Lauren Keiser led with 37 points and had 24 digs, 27 kills and hit .442.
Tara Breske is just a freshman, but as she did in the fall with basketball, she has worked her way into the lineup.
She hit .407 for 15 kills Saturday and led the team with 19 blocks.
"Tara’s playing very well," Manore said. "She’s still going to make freshmen mistakes, but she’s blocking well and that helps us."
The team improved to 50-7 overall, but Manore won’t make a prediction for Saturday if her team should happen to meet up with Fraser after pool play.
"We’ll see," she said, when asked if her team has been playing well enough to beat the Ramblers. "On Saturday we’ll see."
Bedford also has entered its junior varsity team to see how the younger players fare with some of the state’s best.
In the two SEC wins last Wednesday, Rachel Pelhank had strong performances as the team took on Ann Arbor Pioneer in a rescheduled match and then tangled with Saline.
Bedford won 15-0, 15-2, 15-3 over Pioneer, which was forced to cancel the team’s previous meeting when its bus was involved in a non-injury accident on its way to Temperance Jan. 30.
Pelhank had seven kills, while hitting .636; Cassie Mohrbach had six kills, hitting .750; Sulewski had 28 assists, 13 points and 11 digs; and Breske and Cory Calcamuggio each had four blocks.
In the bottom action of the doubleheader, the Mules stung the Hornets 15-3, 15-2, 15-1.
Pelhank had eight kills, hitting .728 and served for eight points.
Stephanie Czupich and Kaczorowski each knocked down eight points, Sulewski had 22 assists and nine digs and Calcamuggio recorded three kills on her four tries.
Pool play will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the playoff matches taking place in the late afternoon.
On Monday, the Mules complete the regular season with a quad meet at Hanover Horton.
District action gets under way next Saturday.
