MONROE TWP. — Business at 9-5-9 Hair Design has always been steady.
In its 10 years of existence, customers have always come in, no matter what time of year it was, said Manager Brenda Gray.
"We’re pretty busy," Gray said. "All of us have worked enough years to be well-established."
9-5-9 is a full service hair salon at 959 N. Telegraph Rd. that specializes in hair, nails and massages.
The salon caters to senior citizens, but can give just about anybody just about any kind of haircut. Many of its cosmetologists have been with 9-5-9 since it opened, Gray said.
"They’ve been with us since day one," said Sue Nunn, who owns the salon with her husband, Ray. "They’re always busy. They have a great relationship with their clients."
Nunn has been a hairdresser since 1968, and has owned and worked at several salons. She doesn’t work at 9-5-9 anymore, but she still enjoys getting a massage there, she said.
"They’re good hairdressers," she said.
The salon uses all the current popular products, like Redken and Matrix. Highlighting and straightening have been popular styles lately, Gray said.
Cosmetologist Beverly Taylor has been at the salon since the beginning, and has been doing hair since 1966. She’s seen a lot of changes in that time.
"The technology has changed," she said. "It’s a lot more versatile than it used to be. There are more products and choices. I like it a lot better."
For nine years, Taylor voluntarily cut hair at Mercy Memorial Hospital for people in wheelchairs. She still serves wheelchair-bound people at 9-5-9, she said.
The salon is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Call 1-734-457-4247 for more information.
