FLAT ROCK — Gloomy skies and rain surrounded Flat Rock Speedway the entire day and kept the crowd away Saturday night, but the racing was perhaps the best overall show at the quarter-mile asphalt oval in several years.
Harold Fair Jr. was the big winner, as he captured the Royal Truck and Trailer/G Tec Truck Equipment Gold Cup 100-lap Late Model feature.
Dennis Whisman, Regan Ford, Ed Hindall and Tim Murphy were also victorious in their respective main events.
Carl Bumgardner of Royal and Kris Granning of G Tec met Fair in victory lane. Engine Pro awarded a Comp Cams camshaft to Fair, while the other four winners received Performance wires from Accel.
A 32-car field was on hand for the ARCA Allen Chevrolet-Cadillac/Cintas Late Model class. Dennis Strickland started the night off by setting the D & H Kenworth quick time at 11:397.
The top 20 cars were locked in, with four more coming from the 15-lap last-chance race, which was won by Dick Barker over Jeff MacZink, Steve Tabor and Steve Peters, who just nipped Lenny Roberts for the final transfer spot.
Jimmy Thiel took command of the lead at the green and ran strong out front. Thiel, who is concentrating on the ARCA RE/MAX Series this year, had plenty of company as Fair Jr., Joe Hawes, Paul Pelletier, Strickland, Stan Yee Jr., Harold Fair Sr., Steve Cronenwett and Eric Lee in tow.
Dave Kuhlman, from his 10th starting spot, joined the pack as the race ran with very few yellow flags. Jerry Cook was also on the move from his 14th starting spot to the 8th spot.
Lee and Kuhlman tangled around lap 40, sending both to the tail. Kuhlman charged back to the front as Fair closed in on Thiel several times.
On lap 85, Fair made the move to the low side entering turn one, taking the lead and zooming to the win. Kuhlman got by Thiel on lap 96, using the high groove as he completed a great run back to the front to finish second.
Thiel was third, Harold Fair Sr. fourth and Steve Cronenwett fifth. Yee and Pelletier were involved in an incident, dropping both from contention. Hawes dropped out with mechanical woes, while Lee suffered a flat tire late in the event.
Strickland came back after a spin to finish sixth, followed by Robbie Loving, Bill Steinhilber (from 25th), Steve Bunge and Mike Jaynes.
Dennis Whisman won his second 20 lap ARCA Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Figure 8 feature as he held off Jeremy Miller’s challenge to take the win in the action-packed event.
Ricky Kargel was third, Greg Studt fourth and Dan Apperson fifth, followed by Eric Buck, Parker Wade, Billy Earley, Rich Lee and Troy Herrmann. Kargel set fast time at 20:872, while Miller and Wade took the heat races.
Regan Ford slid under Tim Moore and Brian Norton on the final lap to score the victory in the 25-lap Casite Street Stock feature event.
Moore led for 24 laps as the challenging duo worked him over the entire distance. Ford was able to hold on for the win over Norton, Terry Humphrey slipped by for third, Moore dropped back to fourth and Tony Ortega fifth, followed by Scott Selmi, Clyde McKee, Randy Casey, Greg Studt and Dave Kensler.
Veteran Ed Hindall won his first-ever feature, taking the 15-lap B Main over Mel Worley, Chris Fitzpatrick, Mitch Crider and James Rae.
Another first-time winner saw Tim Murphy take the C Main over Jim Stocker. Ford set fast time at 13:087 for the 51-car field. The A heats went to Norton, Terry Lilley and Rob Moore. Eric Fitzpatrick, Rae and Rich Abel won the B heats, while Paul Falkenburg took the C heat.
A total of 101 cars were on hand for the night.
It’s Leppen Chiropractic Bicycle Give-Away Night at Flat Rock Speedway next Saturday. Every fan will have the chance to win one of many bikes to be given away that evening.
The ARCA Late Models, Figure 8’s and Street Stocks will provide the action. The Ford T-Bird Go-Karts will also be at the track. Time trials begin at 5 with racing starts at 7 p.m.
