DETROIT — The Detroit Seminoles are a very good football team.
The Southern Michigan Timberwolves found out the hard way as they were beaten 74-14 Saturday night in Detroit.
"They really put it to us, " General Manager Scott beard said. "They proved why their one of the top ranked teams in the country. That was the most points we have ever given up in our ten-year history."
The T-Wolves are 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Mid Continental Football League.
But the Southern Michigan defense got a chance to test the Seminole offense.
The T-Wolves defense stopped the first Detroit drive. The Seminoles settled for a long field goal attempt that was missed.
Right from the start Southern Michigan had withstood Detroit’s first punch on offense.
But the T-Wolves couldn’t capitalize on the defensive momentum.
That proved to be a wake up call for the Seminoles.
Detroit scored 35 unanswered points in the first half to put Southern Michigan in a hole it could never dig out of.
New T-Wolves quarterback Larry Morris, from Carleton Airport hooked up with Jason Siller for one of two scores on the night.
Siller has been Southern Michigan’s go to guy for most of the season and one of the few bright spots on a young offense.
Morris split time with Sam Hunt as the T-Wolves’ signal caller in his first game with the team.
The Seminoles secured a 45-7 against Southern Michigan at the half.
Former T-Wolves standout James Worthy had two punt returns for touchdowns against his old team.
What was a one-sided first half unfortunately didn’t change for Southern Michigan as Detroit continued flexing its muscles for 29 points.
The T-Wolves, although the score didn’t show it never quit.
"We played hard right to the end," Beard said. "Our guys kept it clean and played it out. The game got out of hand and we couldn’t stop it."
Southern Michigan, with three games left before the MCFL playoffs begin, could meet Detroit again in the second round.
And the resilient T-Wolves would like nothing better than to get another opportunity against the best team in the MCFL.
"Our guys weren’t intimidated by the Seminoles and would welcome a chance to play them again," Beard said. "They (Detroit) showed our team where they need to be to compete for a championship."
Southern Michigan will play its fourth consecutive road game Saturday against the Cleveland Lions.
The T-Wolves’ last regular season home game will be played Sept. 20 at Navarre Field.
