Tax time is coming soon.

That statement can upset your equilibrium, but don’t worry — help is on the way, as long as you call soon for an appointment.

Low income seniors often can get larger tax refunds by taking advantage of special credits. Even seniors who don’t have to file can get money back by filing for programs like the Homestead Property Tax Credit, Home Heating Credit and Senior Prescription Drug Credit.

The Manchester District Library is coordinating a program to provide free tax help to low income seniors in filing for these programs and help with simple tax returns. You must sign up for an appointment in advance; call the library at 428-8045.

Appointments will be held Feb. 17 at the village building. The program is available only to low income seniors or to those receiving Social Security for disability.

The program is a community effort, with trained volunteers from Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County providing the tax assistance. The Manchester Area Senior Citizens Council, the Community Resource Center and the library are working together to publicize the program.
